SPARKER ... The Blog

All the news that's fit to forget about.

Conservative jack-of-all-trades, Matt Drudge has actually succeeded in his efforts to force CBS to decide not to air its miniseries "The Reagans." Shame on CBS for bowing to right-wing pressure. This marks many firsts -- none of which fill me with joy: For one, this must be the first time a network pulled a long-scheduled program merely as the result of Republicans' love of censorship. I mean, most broadcast stations would die to have such a controversial piece, especially during sweeps week. Alas, we see now the sway of the right on the actions of the so-called "liberal" mainstream media. Simply put, the CBS execs, most of whom are probably bigtime GOP campaign contributors (FCC anyone?), buckled and played the safe route by catering to a slim but boisterous segment of the political makeup. I mean, no one ever suggested "The Reagans" was meant as a purely historical recount of the Gipper's presidency. But his presidency was controversal, and we should worry when a media corporation opts to duck out of broadcasting an informative albeit flawed account of a significant political figure's public life. I wonder if they'll back off the inevitable Bill Clinton made-for-TV movie should some groups complain of it painting the prez in a less-than-flattering light. I doubt it.

God forbid anyone hopes to write an historical interpretation of many of Reagan/Bush's even more sinister plottings. Boy, those right-wingers sure rediscover their love of protest when it's directed toward meaningless issues and/or a publication of slightly "disagreeable" opinions.

Screw you, Drudge. You've so jumped the shark....
