SPARKER ... The Blog

All the news that's fit to forget about.

It's a good day to be a New York fan: First, the Mets demolished the Cards in a 12-5 victory last night, evening the series and regaining hope that maybe I won't have to sit through another boring World Series comprising two teams about whom no one in the civilized world gives two maggotty shits.

Second, and even better (since I actually like the team during the regular season), the Giants came from behind to beat the Falcons 27 to 14. Despite Warrick Dunn's 90-yard touchdown run, solid plays by Manning and a very-on-the-ball Shockey supplied further evidence of how dominant this team is quickly becoming.

And tonight's MNF game features the Bears at Arizona, a game I'm only interested in because of its potential impact on the Viking's NFC North standings. So far, the Bears have proved unfortunately dominant -- other than the Minnesota game (ha ha), their average winning margin has been 29 points! The Bears, however, didn't open with the likes of Indianapolis or Baltimore; they drew the hapless Packers and equally hapless Lions as warmups, so I'm not giving them too many kudos quite yet. So far, they've been lucky, and it looks as though their luck will keep up, considering how poor the Cards have been this season and the fact that they'll be short two offensive starters. Unless something magical happens, it looks as though the Bears will go 6-0. Then they'll have a bye next week and return October 29 to play the dismal 49ers, so I'm not expecting Minnesota (who will have to test their mettle against Seattle and New England in the next two weeks) to overtake the division this month. November, as I mentioned before, will prove key, and the real test between the Bears and Vikes will come December 3. Until then, I'm keeping my eye on the Giants.
